The National General Assembly of Local Government (the Assembly) will take place in Canberra from 18-21 June 2017.
The theme of the Assembly is Building Tomorrow’s Communities with a focus on local governments creating environments in which people and businesses can innovate and prosper with special panel sessions to do with governing into the future, empowering Indigenous communities, City deals and harnessing tomorrow’s technology.
This year, the Prime Minister, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Bill Shorten MP and the Leader of the Australian Greens, Senator Richard Di Natale have been invited to attend and speak. Other prominent Federal ministers who will be addressing delegates on their portfolios include Senator the Hon Fiona Nash, Minister for Local Government and Territories and the Hon Angus Taylor MP, Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation.
The event starts with the 2017 Regional Cooperation and Development Forum which I know will be of much interest to member councils. This year there will be an address from Senator the Hon Fiona Nash, Minister for Regional Development followed by a discussion on boosting productivity in regions and highlighting industry changes, investments in technology and areas of employment growth. The State of the Regions Summary Report will be issued to all attending delegates.
I look forward to seeing NT Mayors, Presidents, CEOs and councillors at the event and taking part in the debate associated with the many motions submitted for resolution.
Damien Ryan, President
