Where does the money come from?

Local government revenue is collected from a number of sources with the bulk coming from rates, charges and grants. The figure below shows the breakdown of revenue sources for local government in the NT. It is interesting to note that for the remote shires revenue from rates contributes less that 5% to shire revenue compared to over 50% for municipal councils. This combined with the dependence on NT and Australian Government grants (over 60% for shires and under 25% for municipals) is significant in that it reflects the dependence of the shires on the current government policy and short term funding, making long term planning problematic.
