LGANT Meetings

General Meetings

LGANT holds two General Meetings each year. LGANT also holds its Annual General Meeting after the second General Meeting for the year. At the Annual General Meeting, the annual financial statements and annual report for the previous financial year is tabled. At the April/May General Meeting, member councils approve the LGANT annual budget, membership subscriptions and strategic plan. All of the above meetings have a conference segment where key note speakers are given the opportunity to present on important issues affecting local government. The conferences and general meetings are run over two days and are held either in Darwin or Alice Springs. The meetings deal with a range of matters including policy development, decision making, networking and information sharing.

The LGANT constitution can only be altered following a resolution(s) at a General Meeting.

Decisions made at general meetings are binding on the Association and the processes to be followed are determined under LGANT’s constitution and governance charter.

Under the LGANT constitution, any two councils may call for a Special General Meeting and these have been held a couple of times in the last five years. The meetings however have restricted agenda usually to resolve single issues.

Executive Meetings

Executive meetings are generally held monthly in the LGANT offices in Parap, Northern Territory with the Executive members participating in person or by teleconference. The executive is able, under the LGANT constitution, to make decisions on behalf of the Association in between General Meetings. As for General Meetings, Executive Meetings are governed by the LGANT constitution and governance charter. Decisions from Executive Meetings can feed into the agenda for general meetings and vice versa. The Executive holds a Strategic Planning Day in February of each year to decide on its annual budget and strategic plan for the next financial year which is then tabled at its February Executive Meeting.
