Council Open House

As part of Local Government Week, Alice Springs Town Council invites the community to a Council Open House event. Starting at 4.00pm community members will meet in the Civic Centre foyer for a guided tour to meet the Council team at the Civic Centre complex followed by light refreshments with the Mayor, CEO and Aldermen in the function room from 5.00pm and then finish by watching Elected Members in action for the October Committee meeting from 5.30pm.

East Arnhem Shire Council 2011 Conference: ‘Strong Communities, Strong Futures’

The second annual East Arnhem Shire Council 2011 Conference is themed “Strong Communities, Strong Futures” and will be held on Wednesday 12 October 2011 in Darwin at the Darwin Convention Centre between 8.30am and 5.00pm.

The 2011 Conference will be a key event of Local Government Week and aims to bring Stakeholders and Local Government Industry together to share business ideas, innovation and contextual issues to develop healthy and positive associations and partnerships.  Upon the success of the inaugural Conference in 2010, East Arnhem Shire Council has extended the scope of the Conference to host over 200 delegates from all tiers of Government, Community and Private Sector.

Strong Communities, Strong Futures 2011 Conference will see a variety of forums, key notes and exhibitions to promote new innovative ideas and increase productivity in remote Northern Territory Remote Indigenous Communities and beyond. A key feature in 2011 is the Launch of the Northern Territories first Reconciliation Action Plan.  

East Arnhem Shire Council is privilege to present speakers that will offer new insights, creative solutions and the valuable stories. Speakers will include Territory icon Ted Egan AO, Territory Mayors & Presidents,  Djapirri Mununggirritj, Timmy Djawa Burarrwanga and Yananymul Munungurr.

City of Palmerston Council

The City of Palmerston Council is inviting the Palmerston community to meet and reconnect with their local elected members during Local Government Week 2011. The council will be holding a free sausage sizzle cooked by Palmerston Aldermen at the Palmerston Library from 10.00am to 11.00am.

 

LGMANT Education & Training Program

9.00am – 4.00pm – Parap Business Centre, Parap, NT

The Local Government Managers Association will be holding a one day workshop on Tuesday 11 October 2011: Introduction to Local Government in the Northern Territory. 

This course is considered suitable for new employees commencing with local government councils and as a valuable refresher/update program for existing staff. The course will provide an introduction to the legislative framework and role of local government within the Australian System of government. In addition the course will provide attendees with the broad requirements and responsibilities of employees in governance matters and their dealings with communities.

On completion of the one day course attendees will have a working knowledge and a better understanding of their role in the general operation of local government and governance issues.

The course content will include:

Local Government Act – The review of the NT Local Government Act, its impact on the governance of councils and its application and effect on local government employees.

Conduct of Council Meetings – The processes and procedures for the conduct of Council Meetings and the role of Councilors and staff including agenda setting report writing, Minute taking and meeting deadlines.

Code of Conduct/Ethics – An understanding of the expectations and ethical behaviour of local government employees and dealing with conflict of interest.

Local Government Association of the Northern Territory (LGANT) 

LGANT will celebrate Local Government Week 2011 by launching two new thirty second advertisements to promote Local Government on commercial television. The advertisements will run extensively throughout the week of 10-14 October 2011 and for three months thereafter.

LGANT will be facilitating a two day HR Forum for Northern Territory local government HR Managers.

Thursday 13 & Friday 14 October 2011

LGANT will host a stand at the Indigenous Economic Development Forum to support partnerships between Indigenous entrepreneurs, communities and organisations, all levels of government and the private sector to close the gap on economic disadvantage.

“Climate Change Resilience: A Local Government Perspective”
