50:50 Vision, Council for Gender Equity

The Honorable Tanya Plibersek, the Minister for the Status of Women and the Honorable Maxine McKew, Parliamentary Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government launched ALGWA’s 50:50 Vision- Councils for Gender Equity program on the 26 July 2010 at the Australian Council of Local Government’s dinner held at Parliament House.

The program was designed to be accessed by all councils regardless of their size, location and progress on gender equity. Councils were able to apply for accreditation across three levels – bronze, silver and gold and must move through these levels sequentially. The accreditation and identification of councils as 50:50 Vision employer of choice will make it easier for councils to attract and keep strong female candidates and officers.

In order to achieve a Bronze Award a council must achieve the following:

  • Provide a council endorsement statement of commitment to address gender equity issues;
  • Conduct a self assessment of staff and elected representative gender ratios;
  • Outline at least one project they will undertake to address gender equity issues; and
  • Nominate a 50:50 Vision champion to carry the program within the organisation

The first level of accreditation in the 50:50 Vision: Council in Gender Equity Program Bronze Awards was presented at the ALGWA National Conference at the end of November 2010.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Darwin City Council and Tiwi Islands Shire Council who were both successful in receiving the 50;50 Vision Bronze Awards for their councils. We wish them well with the next step of achieving the Silver Award.
