Local Government Recovery/Resilience Planning
In 2010 LGANT was successful, with the support and assistance of the Northern Territory Emergency Services (NTES), in obtaining funds under the Natural Disaster Resilience Program to manage the facilitation and convening of emergency management and disaster recovery workshops for all local government councils in the Northern Territory.
The emergency management and disaster recovery workshops, which are now well underway, are being conducted over a two day period at each of the Northern Territory local government councils. The first day provides participants information on legislation and roles and responsibilities of government agencies during an emergency situation in the Northern Territory. On the second day using a template and guide, LGANT works with councils to develop their own council emergency management and disaster recovery plans.
The emergency management and disaster recovery workshops focus on local government responsibilities in recovery including getting local government services back to where they should be after a disaster event. The workshops also aim to assist councils to manage expectations and ensure outcomes and tasks indentified in the plans are achievable and manageable by councils and communities.
The following agencies have assisted LGANT with the workshops:
In late May/early June 2011, LGANT proposes holding a review workshop to identify gaps and actions to ensure council emergency management and disaster recovery plans are completed and updated. Two participants from each council will be invited to attend.
