Roads
At present, local councils in the NT manage 15,241 km of local roads network and LGANT manages 2,174 km of road network throughout the Northern Territory. However, with the continued rapid growth and expansion of the Territory, these numbers are set to continuously increase.
The road network comprises:
- Sealed and kerbed 680km
- Sealed 646km
- Gravel 1,993km
- Formed 2,598km
- Flat bladed 9,324km
The provision of adequate road infrastructure is critical to the economic and social wellbeing of communities, particularly in remote areas.
Roads are an integral aspect of society functioning effectively as they provide:
- Access to communities;
- Links to other communities;
- Movement of freight, especially essential goods and services;
- Access to government and medical services; and
- The conduit for employment and business development in communities
LGANT is continuously involved in the project and program management of road projects throughout the Northern Territory. Furthermore, LGANT continuously works in conjunction with the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) to lobby the federal government to ensure that roads funding such as the Roads to Recovery program continues to provide benefits to local government in the NT.
