Remote communities under siege

.
Media Release:24/08/2007

Local Government Association President Alderman Kerry Moir today said that she was concerned but not surprised at an article in ‘The Australian’ (21/8/2007) headed “Council bosses threaten to quit”.

“Remote communities in the Northern Territory are facing council amalgamations, Federal Intervention and on top of that the cancellation of CDEP will mean that the local government workforce will be severely reduced”, said Alderman Moir.

“It is Council CEOs that are ultimately responsible for ensuring that the community runs smoothly and I have the utmost respect for the majority of CEOs working on remote communities” said Alderman Moir.

“Communities are now being inundated by government bureaucrats of all persuasions, often arriving unannounced and all wanting their time”, Alderman Moir said. “CEOs and Council members are frustrated, angry and confused. Typical is an email that LGANT received from one CEO below”.

“We didn’t have an emergency before but now we do!!! I must have 20 meetings booked with us in the next 10 working days from every Fx@#$ agency ....there is no time to work only attend meetings to talk about nothing because nobody has any answers or resources..!!!
