‘LGANT applauds the Federal government ‘s decision to restore indexation to the financial assistance grants paid to local governments as announced on Tuesday in the 2017-18 budget’ the President of LGANT, Mayor Damien Ryan.
‘Over the last few years we have been down about $3M due to it being taken away and for some councils it is one of the few sources of revenue they had access to that was linked to growth in Australia’s economy’.
‘Indexation is worth close to $1M per annum in total for all 17 Northern Territory councils who will share this amount in accordance with NT Grants Commission allocations’ the President said.
‘It is good for councils and the Northern Territory economy and thanks to everyone that played a part in bringing it about especially the Australian Local Government Association.’
Thanks to councils who assisted LGANT to lobby our Northern Territory Senators and Federal members and for the assistance provided by the Northern Territory Minister for Housing and Community Development, the Hon Gerry McCarthy MLA and the Federal Minister for Local Government and Territories, Senator Fiona Nash’.
