A note from our President

The Mayors, Presidents and CEO forums followed by the annual general meeting and general meetings will again take place this year at the Alice Springs Town Council Chambers on the 1-3 November 2017. The event will also involve the election of the new LGANT Executive members from NT councils voting for their representatives.

The recent 2017 Leadership Symposium at the Rydges Hotel in Palmerston on the 5-6 October was an outstanding success which saw many at the leadership level undertake professional development . The two days consisted of presentations from key note speakers and a number of workshops around leadership such as   roles, responsibilities, legislative compliance and meeting procedures. Feedback was extremely positive with many council attendees agreeing that further training and refresher sessions would benefit both themselves and their fellow council members.
Many thanks to all the presenters who gave informative and practical sessions that were most beneficial and engaging.  Particular thanks go to the Department of Housing and Community Development for supporting and funding the event and the Hon Gerry McCarthy who opened the symposium and stressed the importance of continued training and  ongoing professional development around local government and the wider issues that affect councils.  Congratulations go to the Finke community for winning the 2018 Territory Tidy Town award. The hard work that goes into keeping their community clean has been acknowledged and I commend the MacDonnell Regional Council in once again continuing to show their pride and dedication in communities across its region.

Damien Ryan, President
Local Government Association of the Northern Territory
