‘The passing of the Mayor of the West Daly Regional Council on Sunday is indeed sad and on behalf of the local government community I express sincere condolences to his family’ the President of the Local Government Association of the Northern Territory, Mayor Damien Ryan said today.

The communities of Wadeye, Peppimenarti and Nganmarriyanga and their neighbouring homelands have lost their local government leader and councils throughout the Northern Territory have lost one of their leaders.

The Mayor enjoyed talking with people about the kinds of services, infrastructure and facilities they wanted and whether or not they were happy with what the council was doing for them.

In the February 2017 issue of Local Government Focus he said:

Working in local government gives me a chance to contribute to the community and try to fight for these services.  It’s hard for us to offer things that a lot of other people take for granted.  It’s pretty hard out here in the bush, particularly when you are Indigenous; the figures are stacked against us.’

I’m proud of me and my council and what we’ve done since we amalgamated.  We’re trying to build a foundation at the moment so whoever comes along in the future has got something to stand on.’

‘In a position that is hard to win accolades, the Mayor has helped build that foundation and we will miss him’, the President said.
