Waste Management in Small Communities
The management of waste in small and remote communities is challenging. Many of our members face barriers when delivering waste management services in small communities, including:
- Logistics: distance to services and facilities
- Economics: the price of safely disposing of hazardous materials can be prohibitive
- Operations: lack of fit for purpose equipment and maintenance
- Environmental: floodwaters, rocky soils and harsh weather patterns
To help our members deliver a safe and environmentally sound waste service in small and remote communities LGANT, with the support of the NT Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts & Sport (NRETAS) and the Product Stewardship Forum (PSF), has developed three tools:
- Waste Management Guidelines
- Waste Audit Tool
Waste Audit Toolkit (425.5 KiB) - Waste Management Planning Template
LGANT is also ensuring the interests of remote, regional and indigenous communities in the NT are represented at the national level by providing comment on the National Waste Policy that is being developed by the Australian Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.
